Painting Again...

It's been five years since I've put brush to canvas...but a couple of weeks ago I found myself inspired again.

The Muse is funny that way - how she comes and goes, pokes, teases, spurs interests, drops hints and adds kindling to the fire. I'm not sure what it was that brought her back in my life - perhaps it was seeing my empty easel every morning during my yoga practice, perhaps it was the way my niece and nephew bragged "Our Aunt Kristen, she's a really, REAL artist," perhaps it was driving past that gorgeous produce stand every day...or the taste of those tomatoes.

My dear Muse, whatever coaxed you back to my spirit, I'm happy you're here and will enjoy you for as long as you stay.

Watermarks...and other stuff

I did some reading in the Etsy forums and decided I needed to change my watermark. I debated on even using a watermark as many feel that if someone wanted to steal the image it would be easy to remove. But my feeling is that having a watermark at least sends a message, that I claim my work to be mine. Anyhow new watermarks... and new work.

This weekend I walked my puppy down to the boardwalk. It's like a ghost town now, with it being the off-season. But I could still feel the energy I image it has during the summer. This boardwalk has been through some changes through the years. I once found some great historical photos online compiled by Daniel Ray Norris a local photographer. It's great to see what the boardwalk was like in it's Heyday. Much has changed and yet much has also stayed the same. When I saw this sign for Frank's Pizza surrounded by all the carnival bulbs, I thought it was a great image. I tweaked the color and the texture a bit to emulate those days gone by. Getting out of a rut...

There's something to be said for change.

I recently got my hair cut - short and with bangs - which is quite a change from my usual style. It was difficult at first to accept the thought, but I'm so glad I did it! First of all, it's so much healthier - but secondly it's spurred some other changes. My office at work has tended to be a catch-all for the rest of the office - items that need to be sent to surplus, storage for excess supplies and such. I finally got around to having one of my student workers clear it out and I tackled some projects that had been collecting some dust the past few months. I've been inspired to get rid of things I don't use and wear clothes I haven't worn (or get rid of them)! Last night I even tried a new recipe - and it turned out amazing!!

I know you're all wondering what it was...Chicken Parmesan Sandwiches and they were a big hit!

So in the spirit of embracing change...

Hello Again...

Well...I know it's been awhile. Funny how life can get in the way of...life sometimes. If you've followed my blog in the past you are familiar with my Walk with Wednesday and Mellow Out Monday Features. Those photos started with a cell phone camera but I soon discovered that the more pictures I took the more I enjoyed it. My daily walks soon became about the picture possibilites rather than the activity of walk itself. I started playing with photo programs and manipulating the shots.

My husband and I recently moved closer to the beach - which has been amazing and has continued to feed my interest in this exploration.

I finally got around to working up a piece to post in my shop so I thought I would share it here as well. Please excuse the watermark...

Welcome to The Artisan Chat! Today we are chatting with Brenda from Split Rock Ranch. I stumbled upon her blog through entrecard and discovered a really wonderful lady. She is so friendly and talented and I'm thrilled she was so excited to be featured. I'm fascinated with her fiber work and the process involved - it seems so rewarding. And so...on with the chat!

Where can we find your work?

I sell on Etsy, I have an ArtFire store. We have our own website for the ranch where you can find our llamas and photos of fibers I’ve dyed in the past – basically most of my established colorways. My colorway page. I also have a blog. I am on Ravelry. I also have a Split Rock Ranch group on Ravelry! I have a Flickr account, where I post photos of my latest creations, Twitter and Facebook.

Can you share with us a little history about Split Rock Ranch?

We bought our first llamas in November 1996 – 2 males that we planned to keep as pets and use for packing. We boarded the llamas at the llama ranch where we bought them. We bought our place in May 1997 and brought our llamas home to live with us. There is a very large pine tree here on the ranch that has grown up between the cracks in a rock and it eventually split the rock – hence the name Split Rock Ranch. We bought our first female that summer and added a show quality male, too. We started showing our llamas and winning. We added more females and those females have produced crias (baby llamas) and our herd has grown to 35 llamas. Jim bought me my first spinning wheel in December of 1999 when I decided we needed to start doing something with all the beautiful fiber we were harvesting from our llamas. When Jim was laid off in December 2002 I started selling my fiber art on ebay and at llama shows. I retired from my “real job” as Office Manager for a home builder in June 2008 to work the ranch and my fiber business full time.

How did you get started as a fiber artist?

I learned to knit and crochet as a child but didn’t do much of either while I was working full time and raising my family. My husband bought me my very first gently used spinning wheel for Christmas in 1999. I made the mistake of trying to spin alpaca top for my first fibers, which was a mistake because those fibers are very slick and difficult to draft. Once I switched to easier to spin wool rovings, my spinning took off. Once I got the hang of it I started spinning llama, alpaca, cashmere, angora, and silk. When I started spinning and dyeing fibers I started knitting and crocheting again. Once I started using natural fibers rather than acrylic man-made fibers, I was hooked! It is such a joy to work with such soft natural fibers.

What type of environment do you create in?

I do all my work in our home here on the ranch. Our kitchen is quite large with tons of cabinets and counter space and there is a “breakfast room” in the northeast corner of the house where I have bins of fibers and a table set up with my drum carder on it. It is still a work in progress but I’m trying to get more organized! My views out the windows are of the mountains and the lake across the road behind us, along with the llamas and horses in their pastures, the soaring pine trees and the ultra-blue Colorado skies.

Your fibers have such rich and vivid colors - what inspires you?

I am inspired by Nature and the beauty I am surrounded with daily. Sunsets, sunrises, the intense blue of the Colorado skies, wildflowers, the mountains…

Can you tell us a little bit about the process? What is your favorite part?

There are so many things that I do it would be difficult to pick one thing and describe the process. It all starts with the animals – and the shearing process starts long before the actual shearing takes place! It is all about selecting animals that produce exceptional fiber, feeding them the right diet, preparing the fleece before it is sheared (blowing and brushing the animal out).
I dye fibers (rovings, yarns and fleeces) using either a ceramic crock pot (used exclusively for dyeing) or stainless steel stock pots in the oven. I use light-fast, color-fast professional acid dyes (the acid used to set the dye is white vinegar).
I card my custom fiber blend batts (perfect for spinning, felting or other fiber art) on my hand crank Ashford fine tooth drum carder. I love carding batts using a variety of fibers (wool locks or roving/top, mohair locks or top, alpaca, llama, cashmere, camel, yak, silk, bamboo, glitz, etc.) The colored fibers are my paints and the drum on the carder is my canvas.

Do you have a creative hero? Who is it?

No, I don’t have a creative hero. I pretty much blaze my own trail and let The Creative Muse work through me. So much of what I do has been self taught using books, videos I’ve found on-line and an occasional pointer or tip from someone experienced at whatever it is I’m in the process of learning.

Do you use social networking? How has it worked for you?

Yes, I use Twitter, Facebook, my blog and several ning sites: Creative Café, Café Handmade, Online Shopping Mall, Indiepublic & My Craft Corner
I have my Twitter, Facebook and my blog linked so when I post to Twitter or on my blog it goes to Facebook. I tweet when I list or relist an item in my store. I get a lot of views on my items when I tweet about them.
I blog about new colorways, projects and fiber blend batts. I post things on my personal blog and on the ning networking sites. I post photos of my new work in my Flickr account and on my Ravelry page as well as to my Facebook Fan page.
I have gotten more custom orders this year than I ever have before.

What do you look forward to?

I look forward to each and every day here on the ranch. It is always something new and different and I get to try out new colorways and fiber blends that popped into my head during the night. Yes, I dream in color! I look forward to meeting new customers, friends and other fiber artists who share my passion for all things fiber!
Some day perhaps I’ll have a brick and mortar store and studio where I can really spread out and devote everything to fiber!

If you weren’t a fiber artist what would you be doing instead?

I would probably still be working in the construction industry. I have worked as Office Manager for both commercial and residential construction and loved it. But fiber and the animals that provide that fiber are truly my passion.

What have you always wanted to try?

I have always wanted to try weaving but find warping the loom a daunting task so there my table top loom sits, patiently waiting. I bought a triangle loom, which I find much easier because the same strand of yarn becomes both warp and weft, but I haven’t finished the shawl I currently have on the loom (my first attempt) I am using some of my earliest handspun yarns in purples and greens to make myself a shawl on the triangle loom. One of these days it will become a finished object!

Is there anything else you would like to share?

My Motto: Where fiber is our passion, and it shows!

Welcome to our Artisan Chat! Today we are chatting with Victoria from Three Fates Design. Victoria is another of those wonderful artists I met through Entrecard. I really enjoy her work - her colors are so vibrant and I look forward to seeing what new techniques she's exploring. Where can we find your work?

I sell my work on etsy, 1000 markets, and art fire, as well as at local shows in Southern Wisconsin and Northern Illinois.

What attracted you to beadweaving and lampworking? How did you get started?

My mom is an artist, my dad is a musician, my baby sister is a wonderful photographer, and my brother is an artist and a musician, I think it runs in the family. I really struggled to find a media that I enjoyed; I tried everything and then tried it again. Then my mom bought me some string and beads, and I was hooked. I soon started pushing myself to make more complicated designs. I started lampworking a few years ago. I have always been enamored with lampwork beads, they are just so beautiful. The second I made my first bead (which I still have) I was hooked. I love being able to make a unique bead and then incorporating them into my beadwork.

What type of environment do you create in?

I work everywhere. I have a bead room, but most of my beadwork is done in the living room, or the bed room, or the car, and even the bus. Beadwork is fairly portable, so I never leave the house without some sort of project.I have a small work table right now for my lampworking, but I’m hoping to have my own work space soon (we’re in the market for a house right now).

It’s clear you are always exploring and willing to share your new work, what drives you to try something new?

I like to push myself. I tend to get bored very easily, so always trying something new and pushing myself to think outside of the box keeps me focused. And who wants to do the same thing over and over again, anyone would get bored.

What inspires you?

Everything. I feel like everything around me has a little bit of inspiration on me. I like nature, but I also love architecture and geometry. It’s all beauty and inspiration in my eyes.

Can you tell us a little bit about the process? What’s your favorite part?

Chaotic at times. I always have a few projects going at the same time, but I usually have one main one that I’m working on. I think my favorite part is the beginning; the thrill of not really knowing if my idea is going to work out is great. All the beads or different glass colors sitting in front of me, they are just individual beings at this point, but soon they will work together to make something fantastic. I love that part.

Do you use social networking? How has it worked for you?

I do use a lot of social networking. I have a facebook page , a myspace page , and a twitter account, oh and a blog, but I’m not really sure if that’s social networking.I feel that social networking has really helped to get my business name out there. I know there are lots of people that would have never even heard of my work if it wasn’t for social networking sights. I have also been able to connect with a lot of other artists out there, and that’s pretty invaluable. You can bounce ideas off of them, get feedback about ideas and designs, as well as become inspired by their work.

What do you look forward to?

Packages of beads and/or glass on my front porch. That’s always something to look forward to.

If you weren’t a jewelry artist, what would you be doing instead?

Art wise, I think I would like to be a photographer. I’ve always really enjoyed taking pictures, but I’m not that good at it.If I wasn’t an artist at all, I think I would be doing what I do every day; research. It’s just something I’ve always enjoyed doing.I just couldn’t imagine doing anything else.

What have you always wanted to try?

PMC. I really want to get my hands on some. I started Lampworking because it fascinated me, but it also gave me the opportunity to create my own centerpieces and then create a piece of jewelry that was uniquely my own. I see PMC in the same light. I’m dying to make my own decorative clasps and someday I will.

Sorry - I've been MIA the last few weeks! It's been soooo busy here with the Holiday and all. I also interviewed for a new position - that went really well (still waiting to hear). Things at work are really picking up with the end of the semester. Speaking of the end of the semester - I presented my second term paper last night - also went really well. It was on Kabbalah - so interesting and extremely complicated. I was really drawn to the aspect of looking inside yourself to unite with divine thought. In many ways I found it similar to Kundalini Yoga in theory...but that's another paper.

Welcome to our Artisan Chat with Izile! I was lucky enough to run across Izile and her wonderful collection of oddities through my entrecard drops. We are regular visitors of each other's blogs and I find her unique work and constant exploration and evolution as an artist intriguing. So...on with the chat!

Where can we find your work?

How did you get started?

Well, I'd always been interested in herbs and crystals and the symbolism and metaphysical aspects even when I was a kid. I think it was about 5 years ago or so that I thought of combining them together in a kind of bottled amulet.

What type of environment do you create in?

A chaotic one. I have two roommates and the best light is in the living room. Tada! Chaos!

It’s clear you are always exploring and willing to share your new work. What drives you to try something new?

I have no idea. Honestly, it's been with me since I was a twee-thing. When asked on places like DeviantArt "what are your media of choice?" my honest answer is normally, "anything that's not nailed down."

Your work is so eclectic… What inspires you?

Mostly nature inspires me. Especially when it comes to the Magic Vial Pendants, the seasons of the year have a lot to do with what I create. Gemstones can be gotten regardless of the whether, but certain flowers and plants are only there briefly. Two of my most popular vials can only be made in the spring, because they require cherry blossoms or lilac flowers.

Can you tell us a little bit about the process? What is your favorite part?

Well, probably my absolute favorite part is the gathering and research stage. That's the fun part. Getting to go out on long walks, trekking through the city and it's parks to look for different trees, plants, flowers, etc. Going to my gem shops to see if there's anything new or particularly eye-catching can also be a lot of fun. The gemstones come labeled, so it's just a matter of grabbing the right books to check their meanings. The flora material, however, can sometimes give me fits as I try and identify it and then uncover it's symbolism. That's mostly a spring problem though. Now that fall is fully here and winter is not long off, I mostly use herbs from my own garden, and some woods (like cedar) for the flora part of the mixtures.

Do you have a creative hero? Who is it?

Ow, I have lots of them, though oddly, none of them jewelers or crafters. I like some of the biggies, like Van Gogh, Debussy, Tolkien; and I like some of the more recent or obscure, like Edward Gorey, and Beth from Black Phoenix Alchemy Lab (who I had to give a nod too, because I have a crack-like obsession with her creations).

Do you use social networking? How has it worked for you?

I do, a bit. I have a shop blog on blogspot, the DeviantArt gallery. I am personally on Facebook, though Izile's Oddities does not have their own FB page. I cannot say I've seen much benefit from any of them except DeviantArt. I would estimate a MINIMUM of half of my sales come from DeviantArt subscribers who found me there then followed me back to etsy.

What do you look forward to?

Right now? Food. More long term? I have too many ideas of too many things I want to do. I want to take an aerialist class, I want to buy some PMC to play with, and a blow torch, and when's my next beer night?

If you weren’t an artist what would you be doing instead?

I consider myself much more than an artist. In fact, I often feel embarrassed to even list "artist" amongst my list, largely because I know many people consider jewelry making, especially such as mine, more a craft than an art, and while I do draw and paint, I have not kept up with it as I should. Other things that I do, currently, that I might invest even more time into if I had no artistic inclination, would probably be my music. I am first, and foremost, in my mind, a musician. My bachelors is in classical piano, and I'd probably be giving it even more of my time.

What have you always wanted to try?

PMC! Precious Metal Clay. I have some brilliant ideas (I think), but it's expensive and daunting to just dive into and play with, which is my favorite way of learning a new media. I've also wanted to play the erhu, and recently, the hang (meanwhile my accordion collects dust).

Is there anything else you would like to share?

I'm afraid I'm a bit scattered. It's not a lack of an ability to focus. I can focus on one thing for hours, even days at a time. It's just that I have never understood why people must choose between creative outlets, and so, I don't choose. Etsy buyers, unfortunately, only catch a very narrow window of my makings because it has to do with what will sell. In the past, I've listed herbs from my garden, homemade chocolate truffles (a specialty of mine), bath products (still have some in the shop, I believe), paintings, ACEOs, and sculptures as well as jewelry. It's why I originally named my shop "Izile's Oddities" because of the eclectic nature of my creating. And while we must be pragmatic, and what sells best gets the most time and effort, I do hope to keep listing my oddities as I have time for them.

I'm surprised to say that after nearly 11 years of marriage, this was our first trip to a zoo together! It was a lot of fun - it's a small zoo, owned by a local family. They really had a nice selection of animals and many of them were endangered or threatened. They sold bags of peanuts and corn at the gate (which of course we bought) and most of the animals could be fed (which of course we did). These are just a few of the pics...

Welcome to the second installment of Come see...What Art-Is-In {Artisan} Chat and Giveaway! I discovered Diane from Pixiebell Elfinwear when I was lucky enough to win the April Flowers contest on byhand.me. When I opened the box of goodies, I put on that hat and wore it all night! And secretly...just a little bit of me looks forward the upcoming cool days so I can don it again!

So, without further adieu, on with the chat!

Where can we find your work?
You my find my work on etsy, artfire, 1000markets and in some select boutiques around the US.

What inspired the name Pixiebell?
Several years ago I belonged to a chatroom and had wanted to use the name Pixie, but it was already taken. Elfin, Gnome, Faerie...all taken. Tinkerbell and even Stinkerbell were taken, so I tried on last ditch effort with pixiebell and got it. There really is no story behind the name, I just have always liked mythical type creatures. it is just sheer coincidence that I would, years later, come to knit pixie and elfin style hoods.

What type of environment do you create in?
I'd love to tell you about some vast and glorious studio that I create in, but I really do most of my work in my living room, on the couch with my family, watching movies. I even considered naming my hats in the same style that "Friends" episodes are named. "The Beret I Knit While Watching 'Practical Magic' " or "I Did My Best Not To Cry On This Hood While Watching 'The Notebook'." Some day there will be a studio, but I imagine I will still be sitting on the couch, watching movies.

What inspires you?

I grew up in Vermont, knitwear was essential! I remember discovering my mother's collection of scarves and hats on an upper shelf in a closet one year. I borrowed a long dark blue plaid scarf and a hat in the colours of cole slaw that winter. Keep in mind, I was 11 or something and proper colour combinations were an afterthought. It was nice having something different than what all the other kids were wearing. I felt special.

I grew up and we moved away, but I never lost that want for something cozy. I find my inspiration in the fantasy of still being a kid getting ready to go race down a hill on a toboggan. I still hope to look up in a closet and find big woolen hats, just a little oversized.

I live in Florida now and although we very rarely require warm knitted hats, I believe I have come to fulfill the comfort I seek, in making these hats. Perhaps I even live vicariously thru them. Parts of me are scattered all over the world, seeing the sights, squealing with delight over the first fallen snow of the season, breathing the crisp mountain air again. It's the next best thing to actually being there.

Do you use social networking? How has it worked for you?
I love to Tweet! I have found Twitter to be an amazing way to connect with other artisans and people of similar interests. I love being able to share funny little moments without much effort. I love reading and interacting with my friends and followers and getting instant reactions to new ideas and shop listings. I am http://twitter.com/elfinwear if you would like to follow along.

What do you look forward to?

I look forward to the hustle of the fall and winter seasons. I love that feeling that productivity brings. I look forward to being the hand behind creations that will turn into gifts at the holidays.

I came across this blog post yesterday - it is worth your time. Chris Higgins from Mental_floss shares his discovery of this fascinating story of a man that took a Polaroid every day for 18 years until the day he died.

Given I am beginning to document more of my everyday encounters (such as Walk with me Wednesday) I found this story very compelling.

Chris Higgins gives us his discovery and the information he found along the way. Read it in his words here.

The photographs span from March 31, 1979 to October 25, 1997 and range from casual gatherings with friends, simple existence and significant personal moments - each one a brief glimpse into this photographer's life.

This video depiction from YouTube is a sampling of the photo archive. I encourage you to visit the actual website Jamie Livingston's Photo of the Day as well and this blog that gives some more background to the project.

I was touched by this project and found it quite inspiring. I would love to hear what you think.

Welcome to Walk with me Wednesday!

I have always had a thing for frogs and I have a growing collection. Tiny silver ones, knick-knack froggy boxes, ceramic figures, magnets...the first git from the husband was a tiny golden froggy pendant. I think it all started with the little crocheted frog my mom made me when I was small. He's so floppy and fun.

There is a pond near where we live and at night we can hear the chorus of frogs - it's really cool. Well, the other morning I went to my car to go to work, opened the door and right there in the door jam was this little guy!

I am clueless as to how he got there - but it's not the first time. I've found two others on separate occasions in the jam of my hatch - but this is the first I caught on film. Maybe there's a secret froggy trap door somewhere in my car... It took me a while to coax him off the car and into the grass...although I would have enjoyed taking him to work!

Personally, as an artist I own volumes of journals and sketchbooks as does my husband, a theatre professor. We both have a great love for these empty books that wait for our words and impressions.

Where can we find you and your work?

On Etsy for now. I do have a twitter but I'm still experimenting with it to see how I like it.

What type of environment do you create in?

My apartment; I have a craft table set up, along with bookshelves and boxes of crafting stuff. My livingroom is pretty much overrun with craft items when I'm working!

What inspires you?

Often, the materials themselves - finding an unusual antique button, a perfect piece of seaglass on the beach, or a thick, crinkled piece of leather that has character to it...often I'm inspired by the materials themselves. I love to find truly unique materials and then begin to imagine how they can be turned into a lovely book.

Who is your creative hero?

I don't know that I have one -- I'll say nature! Because you can find such beautiful designs in nature. Even a walk in the park can reveal textures, shapes, and designs that are completely inspiring.

What is your favorite aspect of selling on Etsy?

I love that Etsy is very oriented towards unique products and good photos. The forums are also very friendly. So I'd say the whole atmosphere of promoting creativity and individuality.

Do you use social networking? How has it worked for you?

I don't use it much. I recently started on Twitter but I'm not sure I like it that much yet. I am thinking of trying facebook. For now though my Etsy shop is enough.

What do you look forward to?

Sales of course! :)

I'm very much looking forward to Christmas time. I just opened my shop in January so I 'm excited to see what will happen around the holiday season! I'm also going to my first craft fair in September and I'm very excited for that!

If you weren't creating these wonderful journals, what would you be doing instead?

I would always be creating something. I go to school full-time but I love to create in my spare time, it's very relaxing. I doodle all the time-- when I'm talking on the phone, when I'm taking notes in class... I love to draw and create things with my hands. So if I didn't make journals, I'm sure I'd be making something else!

What have you always wanted to try?

I want to try to make my own paper at some point, I just don't have the space now. I also love to try new techniques, and incorporate new materials!

Is there anything else you would like to share?

If you're looking for some inspiring books to read, I can recommend: 'The Richest Man in Babylon,' 'Think and Grow Rich,' and 'Light from Many Lamps.' Two are more about building wealth and success in business, and the last is more inspirational.

Simple Beauties Giveaway

I've been a bit out of touch the past few days - my husband and I had some family come into town - including our young niece and nephew (4 and 5). They had an absolute blast - we live on the coast and they live in the Midwest. They loved the ocean and we spent hour after hour there looking for shells and feeling the waves crash against us. They were able experience things here they hadn't before and we were able to share that experience and create some family memories.

The magic simplicity of the family vacation.

I started thinking about the vacations my family took when I was a child. Every year we went to the UP to visit my grandparents - which was great! One year we took a camping trip with them to Copper Harbor. This was such a fun trip - I remember thinking it seemed so far away and how cool it was to travel with them - my parents and I had a "three man tent" (which we all know is really for one) and the grandparents were in a camper - which I thought was just the coolest thing! The trip was jam-packed - we toured lighthouses and mines, hunted for fossils and copper (found some too), when to tourist trap souvenir shops and bought postcards and tee shirts. It was a fun trip and definitely created some lasting memories. Thinking about this trip reminded me how exciting it was to find those glimmers of the copper we hunted - the simple beauty.

Here's mine: My dad is soooo cool...when I was a kid, we would do camp outs in the backyard (or in front of the fireplace if the weather was bad). We would set up the tent and get the sleeping bags, eat junk food, and here's the best part, we would listen to old radio plays all night. My favorite was always The Shadow.

Last week, I highlighted a bike that I see on my walks that which I would have named Sally if she had been my childhood bike. Seeing Sally inspired me to start looking at other bicycles along the way...I have accumulated quite a collection! And, I'll share a couple this week.

Mellow out Monday

Mondays can be crazy and stressful. It can be so hard to get back into the work week. So, take a moment to mellow out.....

My husband and I are very lucky to be so close to the beach - so for us, this mellow out is a no-brainer. But most days, a journey to the beach just isn't so easy to fit our busy schedules. Sometimes, just taking a moment to breathe and reflect can do the trick.

There are many turtles where I walk - this is just one of the little guys, so relaxed, sunning on the bank.

Sweet, pretty and pink.

I've found myself taking pictures of bikes lately - seats that have seen better days and bent wheels. You'll see them in the weeks to come. But it all started when I came across this bike one day - I would call them my childhood dream bike and I would name her Sally.

Ahhhh....serenity now!
Much like the "telephone" from a couple weeks ago, this is so simple and yet strange. It makes me smile and I'm on the hunt for more.

My mother's jewelry

Is there a piece of jewelry that always makes you think of your mother? Is it something she wore often? My mom had some fun, fabulous jewelry when I was growing up. The one I remember most is the ladybug necklace. I thought it was sooo cool that if you pushed the button, the wings opened and revealed...a watch! I remember the giddiness I felt when I knew she would let me push the button. It was like waiting for the coo-coo to come out of the clock.

Jung and my Art - project

Previously, I wrote a little bit about this class I am taking on Carl Jung and his process of Active Imagination. The final project of the course was to create something - a painting, a poem, a dance, a song, etc., from a dream, or a feeling or image from a dream. The idea is to tap into our unconscious world while in our conscious state and allowing the result to manifest itself physically. The ultimate goal being "individuation" or solidifying the Self. This can be therapeutic as well as allow one to investigate worries (consciously known or unknown).

Jung believed in a universal symbolism which we can apply to the analysis of our dreams once we have identified our personal references. This process is incrediblely personal and complex.

I tried an number of mediums to explore the dream image I selected. The image I selected was a blue flower in the shape of a sun-flower. Without going into all the intracaies of it, a blue flower is an archetypical image and representative of a mandala. As I mentioned, I approached a number of mediums before deciding on this one. I did this as I was concerned I would not be able to separate the "artist" from the process and allow the experience to flow. But I found I could not commit to the other mediums and as I started this piece, I found I was able to let it flow, without editing or judging the quality or refinement of the work.

I enjoyed the process and I am pleased with the outcome. And, without going into a semester's worth of exploration, I feel I was successful in Active Imagination and my journey to individuation.

Using Images in my work

First I will tell you a little about my background. I started in theatre and my degree is in oil painting. My painting was always centered on still life. I loved arranging those little objects like characters on a stage. As I continued my painting I found I enjoyed working in a very small scale and this aspect has carried over into my jewelry design.
I love working with stones and shells but recently I have been fascinated with this idea of incorporating images in my work. I think what pushed me explore this was a couple pendants my husband found for me. One is a Frida Kahlo pendant (she is a major source of inspiration) and the other is a wonderful Asian figure embedded in resin. Through experiments I have found a number of ways to incorporate images. For now I will focus on image transfer.
In some pieces I use the image directly on the object. I will just cut out the image, place it on the support (whether it is metal, bamboo tile, a button) and then apply a clear protective coat finish. I also like to be able to layer images. My penguin piece is an example of this.
I like to use OMNI-GEL you can get it from Fire Mountain Beads http://www.firemountaingems.com. This transfer gel dries clear so it can be used as a protective coat and glue as well. Cut out the image you would like to use, but leave a little edge surrounding the image you can remove this later. I like to prep several images at once. I cut along the seams of a plastic bag and lay it open for my surface workspace wax paper works too.
Apply the gel in three coats with a brush. First coat brush across the image horizontally and then let this dry. The second coat you brush vertically, let it dry. The last coat you brush in a diagonal direction and let this dry. You can brush thick or thin - I like the thick because it adds a painterly texture. After the three coats I usually let it sit overnight.
Typically the paper gets stuck on the plastic so in the morning I just slide an exact-o under the edge of the paper - otherwise the image can stretch. Soak the images upside down in warm water for 10-20 minutes. Take them out one at a time place face down and begin to rub the paper off the back of the image with your finger or a lint-free cloth - I like to use a dishtowel. You can decide how much paper to remove based on how transparent you would like your image to be. Let them dry. Once they are dry you can remove the extra edging you left when you first cut out the image. I usually use scissors for this as the exact-o can sometimes pull at the image and stretch it.
Now you can apply your image to the desired surface. It can either be placed in the original orientation and have a glossy finish or upside down and have a mat finish.
As for images there is a great free ephemera website http://www.art-e-zine.co.uk/ephemera.html and of course the collage websites are awesome. Some of the collage sheets are on thick paper so you really need to commit to rubbing off the back. But if you print from a free image website or royalty free book (Dover has a great series) then plain printer paper is pretty forgiving.

Art Censored!?!?!?!

That's right - it's certainly not a new phenomenon but still astonishing. Especially in this case since this particular instance involves an institution of higher education. An institution like most that strives to stimulate creative inquiry, critical thinking, thoughtful expression and is committed to diversity and inclusion. These are just a few of the goals mentioned in their mission statement.

Unfortunately this diversity, inclusion and critical thinking does not extend to such things as The Century Project exhibit to take place on their campus (for the second time mind you) in early March. Unfortunately this amazing, emotional exhibit has been edited due to one complaint from a gentleman who admits that he has in fact not seen the entire exhibit - just what's on the website. I have two issues with this. One, how can one pass such harsh judgement on an exhibit they have not viewed. Secondly, seeing a piece of art on a website versus in person are two completely different experiences. Never mind the size of the piece or even the quality of the image. Seeing a work of art removed from it's original form changes it and seeing a nude on something as commonplace as a computer screen can affect the viewer in a way that is completely different from the intention. I would compare it to looking at a scanned version of a photocopy of a photograph. Viewing that image would be a shadow of the original photo - unable to convey the true nature of the piece.

This powerful exhibit has been circulating the country since 1992 and according to sources this is the first time in its history a portion of it has been banned. I find it disturbing that one man has had the influence to affect my experience of this exhibit. This exhibit that I have the choice to attend, one that presents these images of women embracing their bodies in every form, in every stage of life. These women are not being objectified they are celebrating their personal existence and sharing it with the world for our benefit. Please don't censor my experience - my experience as patron, an artist, a student of life, a member of the community, a woman.

Jung and my art

I'm taking a course about Jung and Active Imagination. The first half of the class we concentrated on dreams, archetypal symbols in dreams and their meanings. Now we are into the Active Imagination portion - which I am very excited about. In a nutshell, this entails taking an emotion or an image from your dream (your unconscious world) and exploring it through action in your conscious world. This can be done through painting, writing, choreography a dance, composing...you get the idea. Doing this allows us to create a bridge between the unconscious world and the conscious world. Many artists such as Jackson Pollock used this approach in some of their work. The important part (in terms of our psyche) is the act of the exploration and not necessarily the product. I'm looking forward to this exploration and any impact it may have on my art making.

New to this Big Beautiful Blogger World

Ok - so I started my etsy site three weeks ago. I found Twitter on Friday and opened my Art Fire store on Sunday. So, last night I thought...perhaps I should look at a blog? This is all pretty new to me to please bear with me as I learn all the bits and pieces...but I have to admit it's pretty darn cool. I've discovered all kinds of new links, art communities, seen some great art and met some interesting artists.
